AFCON: Favourites and Dark Horses as Round of 16 Games Kick-Off on GOtv

AFCON 2023: Nigeria vs Cameroon

Sixteen teams have advanced into the knockout stage of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2023 currently ongoing in Cote D’Ivoire. The race to advance to the quarter final promises to be keenly contested as the games are set to broadcast live on GOtv.

From the group stage results, favourites and dark horses have emerged. Below is a rundown of the fixtures which will also be available for livestreaming on the GOtv Stream app.

Angola vs Namibia

Group D leader, Angola, will go head-to-head with Namibia in their battle for a place in the quarter-final of the AFCON. After drawing their opening game against Algeria, the Sable Antelopes of Angola recorded victories against Burkina Faso and Mauritania to win the group. On the other hand, Namibia advanced as one of the four best losers following their victory over Tunisia and draw with Mali. Tune in SuperSport Football (ch 61) on Saturday to watch.

Nigeria vs Cameroon

Three-time winner, Nigeria will take on five-time winner, Cameroon. The Super Eagles demonstrated defensive grit against the trio of Equatorial Guinea, Côte D’Ivoire, and Guinea Bissau to emerge from the group stage on seven points in Group A. Their opponent, the Indomitable Lions pulled off a spirited late comeback against Gambia to advance on four points in second place in Group C. Nigerians will be hoping to repeat their 2019 and 2004 quarter-final triumphs against the familiar foe. Tune in SuperSport Football (ch 61) on Saturday to watch.

Equatorial Guinea vs Guinea

All is set for a Guinean derby when Equatorial Guinea and Guinea challenge each other for a prized slot in the quarter-final of the AFCON. Group A winner, Equatorial Guinea have been in scintillating form in this tournament, drawing Nigeria and defeating Guinea-Bissau and the hosts. The National Elephants of Guinea will be wary of the threats their in-form opponent poses when they meet on the pitch. Tune in SuperSport Football (ch 61) on Sunday to watch.

Egypt vs DR Congo

Record winners, Egypt managed to advance from the group stage with three draws against Mozambique, Ghana and Cape Verde in Group B, they will be facing off with the Leopards of DR Congo who also drew their three clashes in group F against Morocco, Zambia and Tanzania. This is set to be an intriguing encounter between the two dogged teams. Tune in SuperSport Football (ch 61) on Sunday to watch.

Favourite: Egypt to win on penalties

Cape Verde vs Mauritania

Cape Verde has been one of the stand out performers in this tournament, coming top of a group which had Egypt and Ghana. They will take on a Mauritanian side that pulled off a surprise victory over Algeria in Group D to qualify as one of the four best losers. Tune in SuperSport Football (ch 61) on Monday to watch.

Senegal vs Ivory Coast

Reigning champions, Senegal made a bold defence statement in the group stage by winning all three of their encounters. They will continue their quest for consecutive continental dominance against the underperforming host, the Elephants of Ivory Coast. Tune in SuperSport Football (ch 61) on Monday to watch.

Mali vs Burkina Faso

Group E winners, Mali will face off against Group D runners-up, Burkina Faso. The Eagles of Mali who managed to secure a victory and two draws in the group stage could be set for a tough challenge when they meet with the Stallions of Burkina Faso. Tune in SuperSport Football (ch 61) on Tuesday to watch.

Morocco vs South Africa

2022 World Cup semi-finalist, Atlas Lion of Morocco will continue their hunt for continental glory against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa. Morocco topped their group after securing two victories and one draw, while the South Africans came second in Group E on the back of a victory, a loss and a draw. The heated clash between these two teams will air on SuperSport Football (ch 61) on Tuesday.

Favourite: Morocco
