Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Michael SAN has called on the INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu to step in and end the political drama in Adawama state

This follows the controversial announcement of APC’s Aishatu Ahmed Binani as the winner by the Adamawa state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Ari in contravention of the Electoral Act

Under the law, only the returning officer is empowered to declare results, announce a winner and make a return.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner’s action was immediately reversed by INEC which described it as null, void, and of no effect.

While commending the INEC Chairman for working assiduously to maintain the integrity of INEC, he urged him to “wake up and deal decisively with the brazen breach of the extant laws and regulations guiding the electoral process in the Adamawa situation”.

He added, “It is appalling watching the Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner trying to truncate a process in which so much effort and resources have been committed into; a breach that thaws public confidence in the INEC organization itself. Such roguery action should be thoroughly punished by INEC”.

The former chief law officer challenged the INEC chairman to act urgently to restore confidence in the process by allowing the Adamawa election to go its full circle in accordance with extant regulations, the remaining results announced, and the winner of the polls declared by the Returning Officer.
