IGP lack the political will, potential and innovative capacity to carry out the reformation – Comrade Akilo

Rights activist and former students leader, Comrade Akeem Temitope Akilo, has called on the President and the National Assembly to take a radical measures in reforming the entity called the Nigerian Police.

Comrade Akilo who made the call in a message release to the media in reaction to the press release by President Muhammad Buhari in the evening of Friday, 9th October, amidst the ongoing nationwide protest by Nigerians, calling for the end of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (#SARS).

President Muhammad Buhari has reaffirmed that, his determination to reform the police should never be in doubt. The President said, IG already has his firm instructions to conclusively address the concerns of Nigerians regarding these excesses, and ensure erring personnel are brought to justice.

In his own reaction, Comrade Akilo said, the Inspector General of Police lack the political will, potential and innovative capacity to address these challenges. What we need is total reformation not only SARS but the entire Nigeria Police Force. If we’re depending on the IGP to handle it, no result will come out from it. The entire police force generally need urgent reform and reorientation towards human right and rule of law.

The Reformation require much more radical measures. The situation demand hands of The President and the National Assembly not just IGP. The reformation should be streamlined as a matter of urgency for strengthening this entity called the Nigerian Police.

The statement read:

Reforming, not end SARS!

President Muhammad Buhari in his address yesternight said, he has instructed Inspector General of Police to conclusively address the concerns of Nigerians regarding the excesses, harassment, oppression and the killing of innocent Nigerians by the men of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Admittedly, I strongly believe in reforming SARS Not End SARS without prejudice to the grievances and displeasure of Nigerians against the insanity, animalism, cannibalism, aberration, moral degradation,  and divergence from the correct, proper norms and normal ethics of the nation’s security apparatus.

But the Inspector General of Police lack the political will, potential and innovative capacity to address these challenges.
