On Monday, May 22nd, 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari officially commissioned Dangote Group’s refinery in Lekki Free Trade Zone. The ceremony was attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, other government officials, and stakeholders in the oil and gas industry.

The project’s success is a significant accomplishment for the country, and Alhaji Aliko Dangote, GCON, the founder of the Dangote Group, has been congratulated for his hard work and commitment to the results.

The Olokola Free Trade Zone project, which was conceived in 2007 as a Joint Venture, was not solely owned by Ogun State. A statement clarifying this by Senator Ibikunle Amosun’s media office called out Prince Dapo Abiodun, Governor of Ogun State, who accused Senator Ibikunle Amosun of being responsible for why Ogun State lost hosting the Dangote Refinery to Lagos State.

Senator Ibikunle Amosun, former Governor of Ogun State, stated that “as Governor, I did our best to the satisfaction and conviction of my conscience,” and said that Ogun State was a minority stakeholder in the Olokola Free Trade Zone, without the decision-making capacity.

Furthermore, he challenged Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to disclose with facts where he or the administration was remiss and which led to the project being moved away from Ogun State. Senator Ibikunle Amosun concluded his statement, hoping that it would give clarity to the subject of the Olokola Free Trade Zone and the relocation of the Dangote Refinery controversy.
