Anambra State House Of Assembly Shutdown Over Fears Of COVID-19

AWKA- Barely one week after members of Anambra State Assembly members were tested for Coronavirus disease the House of Assembly complex was yesterday shut down after some of the results were released.

Though Chairman of the House Committee on Information Okechukwu Okoye allayed fears about some members testing positive, and that the House was shut down because it was fumigated, Daily Independent learnt that the results started coming in two days ago and there had been some apprehension.

When this correspondent visited the Assembly complex located at three armed zone, Awka yesterday the environment was a ghost of its own with no staff on sight except few security people standing by its entrance gate.

“As I approached the gate one security man shouted: “where are you going, these people have been quarantined!”

The state Ministry of Health led by the Commissioner, Dr Vincent Okpala had last week Thursday conducted COVID-19 test on the lawmakers and the legislative staff to confirm their status after returning from the Christmas and New Year festivities.

A source alleged that some results of the test came out positive while some returned negative, adding that the ministry of health equally fumigated the complex to make it safe for use by the staff and the legislators in line with the coronavirus safety protocols.

However, in his reaction Mr. Emma Madu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor, said he was only aware that the ministry of health conducted test on lawmakers and staff of the legislative arm as well as fumigated the environment.

Madu, who said he was unaware if the result of the test has been released or not, explained that the place could have been temporary closed down for sometimes due to the fumigation exercise or as the result if being awaited.

Meanwhile, the house in its sitting last week renewed the tenure of the Transition Committee Chairmen of the twenty one local government areas in the State for another three months.

The renewal was in line with section 208 of the local government law as amended during their emergency sitting in Awka.

The House extended the tenure of the local government Chairmen at Committee of the whole.

There is Speaker read out their confirmation, while members of the House supported it through a voice vote.
