Panick forces early closure of banks in Abakiliki

A security scare this Thursday, brought banking activities to a halt at most Commercials banks in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital on Thursday.

This followed rumours of threats of attacks on banks in the city.

As early as 1 pm local time, the entrance gates of some of the banks visited by AIT.live were securely locked as customers were barred from entering the premises by security guards.

Transactions through other channels including the Automated Teller Machines, ATM, were however opened for customers to carry out their businesses.

Despite the development, the mood in the capital city remained calm, as residents were sighted going about their normal activities.

Some costumers who got caught up with the ‘no banking’ situation, told AIT that they were shocked, even as there was no prior information given about the early closure of operations.

Though the Police in Ebonyi State say there was no cause for alarm, but the apprehension that led to the early closure of operations by most Banks in Abakaliki, may not be unconnected with a robbery attack that took place on Tuesday at one of the commercial banks in Onueke, Ezza South Local Government Area, some few kilometers away from Abakaliki, which left a police officer dead.
